At the age of seven, Monica Corbin, founder of
hotsaucebrown.com, was a trend-setting fashion plate among her
elementary school peers. A voracious reader, she would pour over
fashion magazines like Seventeen, Vogue, and her mother's subscription
to Essence magazine. Perusing the San Francisco Sunday Examiner
was also required reading for listings of upcoming trunk shows.
One such trunk show was that of late designer, Willi Smith, a must
see on the young girl's list. Meeting the designer was a high point
and cemented her desire to pursue a career in fashion.
New York was her destination, but she first stopped
in Los Angeles where she would study art history, foreign literature
and languages. The lure of Hollywood was irresistible and Monica
began a long stint working in the film and music industries for
industry giants including Quincy Jones, Disney and Pixar. Fashion
and design, however, were always reappearing in some form or another,
and eventually wooed her back to the world of fashion. In 1996,
Monica began working as a stylist. She also began designing purses,
scarves and jewelry as gifts for friends and family. Wearing her
creations on photo shoots prompted fellow crewmembers to commission
pieces, thus sparking the birth of Fancy...hand hewn and simple,
yet pretty and delicate. In 1999, Monica's styling experience grew
to include that of corporate stylist for Banana Republic's windows.
Fancy was put on hold, but the ideas never ceased. Now she's back
with an eclectic offering of jewels, fashion, and the latest news
in fashion, music, art and design.
